Al AndulasThe Soul of Spain— May 10th – 19th 2017 (10 days, 9 nights)
Day 1 | Granada
We begin our journey in this enchanting city, after you’ve settle into your hotel participants will gather for our pre-trip orientation meeting, then a welcome dinner at a restaurant in the Albayzín, the historic Moorish quarter located opposite the Alhambra palace the neighbourhood still maintains the layout of narrow streets from that era.
Day 2 | Granada
Wake up in Granada! In the morning we’ll visit the Alhambra, part palace, part fort, part World Heritage site, the Alhambra has long enchanted visitors, a testament to Moorish culture, that watches over the city, where fountains trickle, and spirits of old seem to mysteriously linger. In the evening we’ll make our way through the narrow ascending streets of the Albayzín for a dusk shoot, from up here you can look down over the magnificent palace with Alcazar (fort) toward the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the distance, apparently Bill Clinton recently re-visited this spot whilst on a trip to Spain as he had been there once in his student days and had never forgotten the magnificent vista.
Each evening throughout the tour, for those who wish to discuss the processing and finessing of their images, Jaime will be available to review and advise. This is great time to pick up tips on both the shooting and processing of your images.
Day 3 | Granada
This morning we take a walk through the neighborhood of “Sacromonte”, the birthplace of the local flamenco and home of Granada’s gypsy people, where over centuries the inhabitants have carved a subterranean world of cave houses. In the afternoon you have the option of visiting the summer house of the famous Spanish poet Garcia Lorca, or a free afternoon to explore some of the beautiful plazas, perhaps relax with a glass of wine and some tapas and watch the world go by. Dinner at a cave flamenco bar to finish off our last night in this enchanting city.
Day 4 | Granada - Cordoba
After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll board our private van for the 2 &1/2 drive to the city of Cordoba, there will be many photo ops as we make our way thru the Andalusian countryside. Córdoba is a great place for exploring on foot or by bicycle, feeling millennia of history at every turn. Cordoba's period of greatest glory began in the 8th century after the Moorish conquest, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built to rival the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. In the evening we’ll head to the historic Royal Stables to see a show of traditional Anadalucian horsemanship and culture. The stables with their beautiful vaulted roofs were founded in the year 1570 by royal decree of Felipe II.
Day 5 | Cordoba
Today we head to the mesmerising multi-arched Mezquita, one of the world's greatest Islamic buildings, notable for it’s giant arches and forest of over 856 (of an original 1,293) columns of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. The afternoon you are free to explore the narrow streets that stretch out from the great mosque like capillaries some clogged with tourist bric-a-brac, others delightfully peaceful, or you might like to indulge in a traditional Turkish bath (Banos Arabes) In the evening we’ll return to the Mezquita de Córdoba to photograph at dusk under floodlight.
Day 6 | Cordoba - Ronda
After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll board our private van and head towards the evenings destination the beautiful hilltop town of Ronda, Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles spent many summers there as part-time residents, both wrote about Ronda's beauty and famous bullfighting traditions. Along the way we’ll stop for lunch at the white town par excellence of Olvera, dramatically topped by an Arabic castle, Olvera beckons from miles away across olive-covered country. Settle into our hotel in Ronda then join Jaime for a walking tour across the famous double arched bridge connecting the two sides of this beautiful town. The rest of the evening is your’s with an optional photo review session for those interested.
Day 7 | Ronda - Seville
This morning we’ll head off to see the Plaza de Toros La Ronda bullring, it’s one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Spain. After lunch we board our van for the two to three hour trip to Seville, after settling in at our hotel Jaime will take an optional walking tour around the old city wall and gates, a glass of wine and tapas thrown in for good measure.
Day 8 | Seville
This morning we head off thru the old part of town to see the magnificently Gothic Seville Cathedral one of the largest Christian churches in the world, awe-inspiring in its scale and sheer majesty and the last resting place of Christopher Columbus. We’ll have lunch in the old part of town, optional photo review afternoon then in the evening we’ll head to the river to photograph the Torre del oro (Tower of Gold) at dusk.
Day 9 | Seville
After breakfast we’re off to visit the Palacio de Lebrija, this 16th-century mansion has a rich collection of art and artisanry and a beautiful Renaissance-Mudejar courtyard from here we head to the Reales Atarazanas (Royal Shipyards) Game of thrones season 7 finale was filmed there recently. The last afternoon is free to do some shopping, seek out that final tapas bar or relax
This evening we’ll gather for a farewell dinner.
Day 10 | Seville
Tour ends, group participants depart after breakfast.
